Making Inclusive Mobility Visible – Signage Concept for BVB
For the Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe (BVB), Milani developed a new signage concept that enhances accessibility, improves orientation, and gives the vehicles a clearer and calmer overall appearance.

The Challenge: Translating Complex Requirements into Clarity
Anyone traveling with impaired vision knows the challenge: doors on buses or trams are not always immediately recognizable, and orientation can be difficult. This was exactly where BVB needed to act in response to new legal requirements for equality. The signage of the entire bus and tram fleet had to be redesigned so that it would be more accessible and understandable for all passengers, including those with visual impairments. The task was not only to meet legal requirements but also to create a solution that is both functional and seamlessly integrated into the design.
A Clear and Distinctive Signage System for All Passengers
For BVB, this topic was completely new territory. Milani brought the necessary expertise and guided the transit operator step by step through the complex process. Together with the stakeholders, the team developed a holistic concept that demonstrates: accessibility is far more than simply meeting standards – it is an integral part of good design.
The result is a new interior and exterior signage system that works intuitively for all passengers. Doors are immediately recognizable, entry points are clearly marked, and information for visually impaired passengers is visible and understandable. Inside the vehicles, numerous stickers and symbols were reorganized, bundled, and placed more effectively, making them much easier to see. At the same time, the overall appearance of the vehicles is calmer, more orderly, and significantly more accessible. For BVB, this means not only compliance with equality requirements but also a visible strengthening of their brand identity as a modern and inclusive mobility provider.
