One platform, three identities: Milani creates design concepts for SBB, Thurbo, and RegionAlps
In the international competition for new regional trains for Switzerland, Milani worked with Alstom to develop three individual design concepts. A harmonious overall picture and tailor-made solutions for three railway companies were created on a shared platform.
One competition, three operators: a balancing act for design
In 2020, SBB, Thurbo, and RegionAlps issued a joint tender for the procurement of 194 new single-deck S-Bahn multiple units. The goal was to modernize their fleets, leverage synergies, and provide passengers with modern, environmentally friendly vehicles. This tender was unique because the three rail companies chose a common vehicle platform that could be tailored to each operator's needs.
In collaboration with Alstom, we developed unique design concepts for the exteriors and interiors of the three operators' vehicles: SBB, Thurbo, and RegionAlps. We developed the story behind each design, defined the materials and color schemes, and created the vehicle layouts. Every detail was tailored to the operators' different needs, from brand identity to the passenger travel experience.
In addition to the design drafts, Milani took on designing the official design competition booklet. The booklet presented the concepts in a clearly structured manner, both visually and in terms of content, forming the basis of Alstom's competition entry.
