Designing Telemedicine for Real Life - Bosch Healthcare Solutions

What happens when highly complex medical technology enters the home? For Bosch Healthcare Solutions, this question became the starting point for a new generation of telemedicine devices. Together with Milani, the goal was to create a connected system for home health monitoring that doesn’t feel clinical or technical, but clear, intuitive, and trustworthy. Especially for older adults.

Making complex medical technology intuitive for older patients

Telemedicine devices in the homecare environment operate in a challenging space between high technological complexity and the need for maximum simplicity in use. They must meet strict regulatory requirements while remaining accessible to user groups who often have limited experience with digital products.

For Bosch Healthcare Solutions, the challenge was to develop a new device family that could be reliably used by both healthcare professionals and elderly patients. A key focus was how to integrate multiple peripheral devices such as scales, blood pressure monitors, and glucometers so they communicate automatically and function as one coherent system from the user’s perspective.

At its core, the goal was to design complex technology in a way that builds trust, reduces errors, and remains intuitive in everyday use.

User-centered design as the foundation for better product decisions

Milani supported Bosch Healthcare Solutions throughout the entire development process, from early concept phases to validation in the target market. The work was driven by a consistent user-centered design approach, ensuring that the needs, capabilities, and limitations of end users were systematically integrated into the development process.

Based on these insights, Milani developed multiple product design as well as UI and UX concepts, covering both the physical interaction with the devices and the digital user interface. These concepts were translated into functional hardware and software prototypes and tested under realistic conditions in the U.S. market.

The iterative combination of prototyping and usability testing made it possible to identify weaknesses within the system early on and address them effectively. At the same time, this process provided a solid foundation for decision-making, helping to validate design directions and guide the strategic development of the device family.

Higher user acceptance and strong market impact

The resulting device family enables intuitive and safe use, even for older adults with varying physical and cognitive abilities. Clear interaction design and consistent user guidance reduce uncertainty and minimize user errors. The seamless connectivity between devices creates a coherent user experience that builds trust and makes everyday use at home significantly easier.

At the same time, Bosch Healthcare Solutions benefits from a strong foundation for product decisions. Early validation with real users reduced development risks and prevented costly missteps. The iterative approach improved development efficiency and shortened time-to-market. The clear integration of product design, UX, and system thinking strengthens differentiation in the telemedicine market and provides the basis for a scalable, future-ready product family.
