Product Design & UX/UI Design for Sandy: a baby monitor that grows with your child
Together with Swiss startup Dokoki, Milani developed Sandy, a connected baby monitor designed to grow with the child. Milani helped the startup turn its idea into an intuitive product, bringing hardware, UX/UI, and app together into a seamless overall experience.
MySandy received the Red Dot Design Award for Product Design in 2021.
Challenge: Turning an Idea into a Product for Parents and Children
Dokoki had the idea for a baby monitor that would stay relevant to families for longer than conventional solutions. Sandy needed to give parents peace of mind while being designed so that children could later use the product independently. This brought together very different requirements: intuitive operation for parents, child-friendly use at a later stage, and functions that evolve over time. The challenge was to bring these elements together in a coherent product with an identity of its own.
Approach: Designing Hardware and UX/UI as One Experience
Together with Dokoki, Milani translated the idea into a physical and digital product experience. Product design, touchscreen, and app were conceived as parts of one connected system. The smart baby monitor features a room temperature sensor and HD night-vision camera, giving parents peace of mind about their baby’s well-being. All key functions can be easily accessed via the app and touchscreen.
But Sandy is more than just a baby monitor. As a friendly companion, the product grows with the child. At first, the adjustable night light creates a comforting atmosphere at bedtime. Later, Sandy transforms into a portable audio system that lets children discover music and stories on their own.
Result: Turning a Startup Idea into an Award-Winning Swiss Product
With Sandy, Dokoki brought to market a distinctive product that combines a baby monitor, night light, and portable audio system in one coherent concept. Milani helped the startup translate its original idea into an intuitive physical and digital product experience. The design makes growing with the child an integral part of the product concept. While parents are the primary users at first, children can later use Sandy independently, extending its relevance beyond the traditional baby-monitor stage.
