Dräger – design pioneer in medical technology with a new product language
User-centered design for highly specialized hospital and medical technology workflows
Milani’s product design for Dräger focused on process optimization, outstanding usability, improved interdisciplinary networking and optimal safety in line with the exceptionally high quality standards for which Dräger has been known for more than a century. Through ongoing dialog with all stakeholders, including 1-to-1 on-site studies and OR visits, Milani evaluated, defined and qualitatively refined highly specialized hospital and medical technology workflows and processes.
Development of Dräger’s distinctive blue and white medical product design language
Over decades of collaboration on more than 100 individual projects, Milani developed the unmistakable white and blue product design that still shapes the industry today.
The company’s graphical user interface and all corporate pictograms were also derived from this design to create a consistent brand experience. Milani developed a consistent operating logic across all applications and products, and a uniform appearance for the graphical user interfaces. This increased efficiency for users and proved a clear advantage for Dräger Medical products on the market.
Innovation in the highly technical and emotionally sensitive area of neonatal intensive care
Together with Dräger, Milani designed the legendary Caleo® incubator in the mid-90s, which set completely new standards in the care of premature babies in neonatal intensive care units. The Caleo® was the first incubator to feature kangaroo mode, an innovative method of bringing baby and parents together while ensuring continued thermoregulation.
As well as optimizing intensive care, the challenge was to improve the protected environment and achieve a significant noticeable reduction in stress for premature babies and parents in neonatal units. The result of this challenge was the development of a kangaroo mode, which allowed for much closer physical contact between parent and child than had previously been possible.
Thanks to the kangaroo mode developed by Milani in collaboration with Dräger, a premature baby can be continuously monitored, even when they are outside the incubator, and have skin-to-skin contact with mom or dad. Milani made the height of the incubator adjustable so that parents have enough knee room under the incubator to sit close to their baby.
In addition, we significantly reduced the noise level inside the incubator, which is essential for promoting a newborn baby’s development, and designed the incubator to resemble a cradle to create a more trusting environment for parents.
