Improved scoring in reparability index for household appliances
For a market leader in household appliances, Milani analyzed the repairability of two key products and identified optimization potential. The goal was to achieve the best rating in the French repair index and thus also be prepared for future regulations under the buzzwords "Right to Repair".
New circular economy law: mandatory transparency on the reparability of products
Since the beginning of 2021, France has had a legally binding repair index to strengthen the circular economy and create incentives for increased product sustainability. Consumers will be able to find out how easily the products can be repaired in the event of damage when purchasing certain electrical and electronic equipment. This means all manufacturers of such appliances must prominently display a repair-friendliness rating at the point of sale. As an international manufacturer of household appliances, the company had to implement the new legal regulation within a short time frame and at the same time strive for the best possible rating in the new repair index in order to position itself as a supplier of sustainable appliances.
At the same time, the company wanted to prepare for the future. The European Commission is currently looking into the introduction of a European repair scoring and is conducting studies on possible implementation in connection with labeling for energy efficiency. It is therefore foreseeable that measures similar to those in France will soon apply throughout Europe.
Strategies for higher rating in the French repair index
Milani analyzed the repairability of two key products and navigated the appliance manufacturer through the new specifications of the French Repairability Index. The needs of consumers as well as those of producers were taken into account.
Working closely with the manufacturer, Milani identified easy-to-implement optimization potentials and developed short- and medium-term strategies to achieve a higher rating in the repair index. Furthermore, Milani outlined a roadmap to address deeper optimizations, from equipment design to business model. Milani drew on a wealth of experience in industrial design and knowledge of the circular economy.
