Product Design and UX for Medeva’s Insulin Case: Designed Like a Fashionable Consumer Product
Milani collaborated with the Swiss startup medeva to develop an insulin case that no longer needs to be hidden. Essenza was intentionally designed to feel like a stylish consumer product rather than a traditional insulin storage solution.
Milani supported medeva throughout the entire process, from the initial idea and product design to UX, branding, packaging, and mass-production readiness.
Everyday insulin management: uncertain, inconvenient, and often hidden
Insulin must be stored safely and kept within a reliable temperature range while also being constantly accessible throughout the day. Existing solutions meet the technical requirements but often fall short in everyday use. The founder of medeva knows this problem firsthand: cooling packs, bulky cases, and the constant uncertainty about whether the insulin is still safe to use. Many users also carry their insulin discreetly and avoid using it visibly in everyday situations.
The challenge was clear: How can an insulin case be designed to provide confidence and safety while feeling like a stylish consumer product instead of a traditional medical accessory?
Approach: giving users back control and designing an insulin case that doesn’t need to be hidden
Milani did not start with form or features, but with a closer look at where uncertainty occurs in everyday use. The user journey analysis revealed recurring pain points: users often did not know whether their insulin was still safe to use while on the go, and accessories such as needles were frequently stored separately in an unorganized way.
This is exactly where Milani and Medeva focused their efforts, developing an intuitive usage concept designed to give users back control. A key priority was making the insulin status clearly visible while integrating pens, needles, and the case itself into one logical system.
At the same time, Milani created a design language that intentionally moves away from the conventional look of medical products. A reduced form language, premium materials, and a clear color palette make the case feel comfortable to leave visible on a table instead of hiding it away.
Result: more confidence in everyday use and clear market differentiation
With Essenza, medeva fills a clear gap in the market: a safe insulin case with the feel and appearance of a premium consumer product. Users can instantly see whether their insulin is still safe to use. An integrated LED provides immediate feedback: green means the insulin remains within the safe temperature range, while red signals that it should no longer be used. This reduces uncertainty and makes everyday handling significantly easier. For users who want more detailed monitoring, Medeva also developed a companion app that allows precise temperature tracking over time.
Usability was also carefully streamlined. Pens and needles are organized in one compact unit, securely stored and always within reach. The ergonomic form fits comfortably and securely in the hand regardless of hand size.
Milani supported medeva throughout the entire development process, from the first concept to market readiness. From the beginning, Milani closely integrated design and engineering, enabling fast decision-making and ensuring the product was consistently developed with serial production in mind. Working closely with engineering partner Teqable, the team brought a production-ready product to life within just one year.
At the same time, Milani developed the entire brand experience alongside the product itself, from branding and logo design to packaging and user manuals, giving medeva a clear and consistent market presence from day one.
