EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR DESIGN FOR SBB'S LONG-DISTANCE DOUBLE-DECKER TRAINS

In close collaboration with the manufacturer Bombardier, now Alstom, Milani designed the new generation of FV-Dosto double-deck trains for the long-distance services of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). The result is a classic that will continue to shape the face of passenger trains in Switzerland and Europe.

Even during the development phase, the train won numerous awards: the Good Design Award, the Red Dot Award and the German Design Award.

Swissness and diverse passenger needs in harmony

SBB looked for a strong partner for the new generation of long-distance double-deck trains. The challenge was to give the double-decker train a strong Swiss look and to take into account the different user groups in the design. The train is used for interregional and long-distance travel by commuters, business people, families and tourists, all of whom have different needs and requirements for the travel experience.

The new FV-Dosto connect Switzerland’s regions and povides more capacity on busy routes with up to 1,300 seats. With a total of 62 trains, the long-distance double-deckers will be the largest train fleet within SBB Long-Distance Services.

Milani has tailored different zones, such as family and business zones, specifically to each target group, allowing for an optimal travel experience. In addition, the needs of passengers with reduced mobility were consistently taken into account and special zones have been created. The train has wheelchair-accessible compartments and toilets, WCs with baby-changing facilities, as well as designated spaces for prams and bikes spread throughout the train. Small details, such as power sockets next to every seat in both first and second class, round off the travel comfort.

Bright and friendly interior design and easy navigation with clear signage

Due to their limited height, double-decker trains run the risk of appearing cramped and small. The material and color concept allowed Milani to create an open and bright atmosphere. Light ceilings make the interior look spacious. Wooden elements combine coziness and elegance.

In addition, Milani developed special signage, including pictograms, tailored to the train and the SBB. This means that passengers can easily find their way around the train and quickly locate the various special areas even from the outside.

Onboard restaurant with class

An important element in the new Dosto train is the on-board restaurant. It had to be attractive for all passengers and exude a modern restaurant character. Milani created an distinct color scheme for the restaurant. Together with the dark wooden floor and the spacious, comfortable room layout, this creates an upscale restaurant feeling.
