Friendly Design Minimizes Vandalism

The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) have been working successfully with Milani for many years. Numerous joint projects have been realized, including the interior and exterior design of the Dosto double-decker trains and the development of new pictograms.

SBB wanted its passengers to feel comfortable everywhere - even in the toilets. A study has shown that bright toilets with friendly motifs are perceived as much more pleasant by passengers. In 2013, 700 SBB toilets were given a new look: modern, bright and fresh. A desirable side effect: vandalism is less frequent in a friendly environment.

Milani developed four motifs to make a visit to the toilet more pleasant: a section of forest, a mountain landscape with a panorama, light blue tiles and a blue sky with misty clouds. There is also a fragrance dispenser that introduces new, pleasant scents, neutralizes unpleasant odours and provides a subtle, fresh scent in the train toilets.

Many other rail operators have followed SBB's lead, with the result that friendly toilet environments are now considered best practice in design.
