IC2000 Train Refurbishment and Interior Modernization
For Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), Milani developed the interior design for the modernization of the IC2000 double-deck trains as part of a targeted mid-life refurbishment, bringing the existing fleet up to current expectations within established technical, structural, and operational conditions.
Challenge: balancing continuity and changing passenger expectations
The IC2000 trains are a key part of Switzerland’s long-distance rail network. The goal was to bring the interior up to current standards while preserving the identity of the existing fleet. The challenge was to further develop an established system within its given constraints and translate changing passenger needs into a design concept that remains relevant over time. Different usage scenarios had to be addressed simultaneously, from commuters and business travelers to families and leisure passengers, each with distinct expectations regarding comfort, orientation, and use of space.
Approach: targeted upgrade under constraints
Milani developed an interior concept that builds on the existing system and upgrades it through precise interventions. The modernization was carried out as a targeted upgrade within existing technical and structural constraints.
Milani retained defining elements of the IC2000 trains, such as the comfortable seating and the characteristic red-blue ceiling accents. At the same time, targeted interventions improved spatial perception and usability.
A new lighting concept and brighter luggage racks significantly improve the perception of space. Indirect LED lighting creates a bright ceiling above the intentionally darker seating area, making the interior feel more open, lighter, and clearly structured. Materials, surfaces, and textures were selected to enhance passenger comfort while ensuring durability for long-term use in daily rail operations.
Result: extended lifecycle and improved passenger experience
Through the targeted refurbishment, SBB extends the lifecycle of the IC2000 fleet while significantly upgrading its usability and the passenger experience. The interior appears brighter, more open, and more contemporary, without losing its recognizable identity. At the same time, the design responds more precisely to everyday travel situations. Improved lighting, clearer spatial organization, and more accessible luggage areas enhance orientation and comfort across different passenger groups.
The newly developed folding tables support both focused work and shared use within the compartment, adapting to different situations. Power outlets at every seat and wireless charging in first-class business zones further support flexible use.
Beyond the passenger experience, the project strengthens the economic performance of the fleet. Extending the service life reduces the need for replacement investments and keeps the existing rolling stock viable over time. At the same time, it demonstrates how a targeted retrofit can upgrade an existing fleet to current expectations while making better use of existing assets.
