Branding and medical product design for Sequana Medical implant pumps
The Swiss medtech company Sequana Medical develops innovative implant pumps for regulating fluid overloads in patients. Using the latest technology, they make the lives of critically ill people easier.
Milani supported Sequana Medical right from the start with naming, branding and product design. This close collaboration spanned the full range of services we offer.
Product development for innovative medical devices
The alfapumpⓇ has made Sequana one of the world’s market leaders for implant pumps. The device is used to treat ascites, an excess accumulation of water in the abdomen, which is a symptom of liver cirrhosis, congestive heart failure and specific types of cancer. Ascites severely limits the quality of life for patients. The alfapump from Sequana Medical addresses this by automatically pumping ascites from the abdominal cavity into the bladder; this fluid is then passed naturally.
The alfapumpⓇ product design draws on Milani’s expertise in medical technology. Its soft, friendly appearance suggests a gentle treatment method. Its curved design denotes flow and symbolizes controlled fluid removal. For patients, the alfapumpⓇ becomes a constant supportive presence; it’s more than just a medical device.
Ergonomic design and ease of use for patients and doctors
The design was created with strict attention to ergonomics: the sand-colored shell of the housing ensures comfortable positioning against the body and guarantees a secure fit. Symmetrical, round contours perfectly adapt to the softness of the human body. The ON/OFF button and display allow accessibility from all sides. The convex curve at the center of the device ensures excellent grip and good positioning.
As with all medical devices, usability posed a challenge; the alfapumpⓇ is also subject to strict safety and hygiene standards. In spite of these high requirements, Milani was able to work with Sequana on developing a user-friendly and ergonomic product design. The alfapump has since been included in the EASL’s (European Association for the Study of the Liver) Clinical Practice Guidelines.
Corporate identity for medtech startup
Sequana Medical was still a young company when developing the alfapumpⓇ and needed modern and friendly branding to match its innovative medical product. Working with Sequana, Milani created not only the product design but also the brand’s corporate identity, and so effectively laying the foundation for the company’s strong positioning in the medtech market.
