Medical design for the new generation of Belimed washer-disinfectors
International manufacturer Belimed Medical produces washers and sterilizers that meet the highest standards of reliability and user safety. Working with Milani, the company has developed the next generation of machines and initiated a radical redesign of the Belimed control platform. The WD290 IQ is the first Belimed washer-disinfector with a full-touch display. This allows complex operating sequences to be carried out in Central Sterilization without the need for external software.
Analysis of user journeys and hospital requirements
Sterilization is a central process in every hospital and has to meet the highest requirements. Belimed wanted its new generation of sterilizers to deliver much tighter support for workflows, such as tracking surgical instruments around the building. This was previously only possible with extensive management software, which posed a major expense, especially for smaller hospitals. Such a solution didn’t exist on the market until this point. One of the main challenges was to adapt operation to the various workflows as effectively as possible.
Milani’s first step was to gather requirements together via a structured, user-centric process. Using an ethnographic approach, the UX team accompanied various users in their daily hospital work routines and analyzed the different needs that came to light.
From wireframes and prototypes to implementation: an agile process for a user-centric medical design solution
Milani tested the user flows in various concepts and then transferred these to wireframes. Very different user groups had to be accommodated, ranging from busy healthcare professionals with a focus on speed to security experts requiring access to comprehensive data. This was verified in user testing sessions. Milani subsequently adapted the interface to Belimed’s branding.
Implementation was carried out in close collaboration with the Belimed team and an external team of developers. The Scrum process made it possible to work through all the complexities step by step and to implement a solution that met all the initial requirements.
The new 290 IQ – complex processes, user-friendly design
The WD 290 IQ is the first washer-disinfector that adapts to the user rather than the other way around. It is an intelligent solution for instrument reprocessing in central sterile supply departments and the key to safe, fast and efficient reprocessing. The WD 290 IQ enables hospitals to achieve perfect hygienic results, keep costs under control and reduce the workload of their employees.
This latest generation of washer-disinfector is equipped with a full-touch display and features an intuitive, customized user interface that allows individual access to current and archived data at any time. The WD 290 IQ thereby enables even the more complex operating sequences to be carried out in Central Sterilization without the need for external software.
