Lighting between medical and living environments: product design for a new bedside reading lamp

Challenge: When a Patient Room Needs to Be More Than Just a Hospital Room
Derungs operates internationally and specializes in lighting solutions for the healthcare industry. Its products must meet the highest technical, hygienic, and functional requirements—even under the most demanding operating conditions. The patient room presents a unique challenge: it serves as both a medical workspace and a personal sanctuary. Nursing staff need reliable, functional lighting for diagnostic and nursing tasks. Patients, on the other hand, often spend days or weeks in this room. They need an atmosphere that is calming and instills confidence. The challenge was to develop a bedside reading lamp that is functional without appearing cold or intimidating.
Approach and result: A balancing act between medical and residential product design
Milani designed AMALIA from the outset with everyone who interacts with it in mind, from healthcare staff and patients to interior planners. Its functionality meets the stringent requirements of healthcare environments, with a focus on hygiene and reliability. Yet in the patient room, the AMALIA bedside reading light feels warm, architectural, and reassuring. Optional ambient lighting allows the atmosphere to be adapted to different situations, whether during medical rounds, while reading, or at rest. Interchangeable lampshade designs also allow AMALIA to complement different interior concepts, from acute care hospitals to senior living facilities. The 360° rotating lampshade makes switching between direct and indirect light a simple, intuitive gesture.
With Milani as its design partner, Derungs created AMALIA as a light that brings together the requirements of everyday healthcare with the qualities of residential design, without compromising functionality or ease of maintenance. These qualities have also made the AMALIA bedside reading light a preferred choice for senior living facilities, where functionality and a welcoming atmosphere are equally important.
