User-centered product design in radiotherapy for LAP
On behalf of LAP, Milani developed the product design for new LUNA 3D camera pod, which combines the technological advancement of the camera pod with an optimal user experience for medical professionals and patient-centricity.
Milani supported LAP in the product development process from initial design sketches to implementation.
User-Centered Medical Device Development
LAP, a world leader in laser technology for improving quality and efficiency, sought a design solution for a new surface-guided radiotherapy system that would combine technical innovation with aesthetic elegance and integrate seamlessly into existing medical environments.
The design process with Milani began with an analysis of the context of use and the needs of the various users: from patients to medical professionals and service technicians. The new LUNA 3D camera pod had to be user-friendly for everyone and ensure optimal medical therapy on CT and LINAC.
Milani also studied the radiotherapy market landscape and LAP's brand identity. Using a specially developed DNA analysis method, Milani and LAP were able to quickly define the brand positioning of the new radiotherapy device and transfer it to the future design language. The result is a product design that is fully tailored to the needs of medical professionals and patients, meets the stringent regulatory requirements of the medical device industry, and differentiates LAP from its competitors in the marketplace.
Optimal user experience for patients and healthcare professionals
In radiotherapy, patients often come face to face with a variety of technical equipment in radiotherapy, large devices in particular. This environment, intimidating in both its complexity and technology, can itself generate even more uncertainty and anxiety to an already frightening medical situation. Milani designed the LUNA 3D Camera Pod specifically to reduce patient anxiety and support more efficient treatment procedures. The device was not designed to look like a monitoring system to patients, but to create a calming and reassuring atmosphere in the treatment room. On the one hand, patients feel more comfortable. On the other hand, treatment outcomes are improved through more efficient patient positioning and movement tracking.
Milani also focused on the needs of service technicians and maintenance requirements. The use of materials such as aluminum allows for efficient heat dissipation and eliminates the need for vents in the housing. This makes cleaning and maintenance easier and extends the product life.
An elegant comprehensive design solution that stands out on the market
In addition to the user-centered design, it was important to develop a product design for LUNA 3D that would allow LAP to differentiate itself in the market. Milani designed the surfaces to create a subtle interplay of light and form and achieve a high recognition value.
In addition, Milani designed not only the housing for the 3D camera pods, but also the entire ceiling mounting system. We simplified the complex mechanics of the mounting system and created an elegant, minimalist overall design solution with integrated cable management and options for optimal angle adjustment. In addition, the design system is modular, allowing LAP to retrofit the camera pads for different camera systems.
The LUNA 3D demonstrates how technological innovation and thoughtful design complement each other perfectly to create a compelling product experience for all users in medical facilities.
