Exterior and interior design of the new Dolderbahn railcars
On behalf of Dolderbahn-Betriebs-AG and in close cooperation with Stadler Rail, Milani developed the modern interior and exterior design of the new railcars. The new design ensures a more comfortable ride and reflects the unique character of the railway.
A unique look that fits the Dolderbahn and its surroundings
The Dolderbahn takes you from the hustle and bustle of the city of Zurich to the tranquility of nature on the Adlisberg in just under six minutes. After almost 50 years, the current Dolderbahn vehicles have reached the end of their service life and are being replaced by new railcars from Stadler Rail. Milani developed the new interior and exterior design. The challenge was to develop a design that fits the railway and the district using sophisticated design solutions. At the same time, the new design had to remain relevant for the next 50 years of service.
Milani designed the new Dolderbahn railcars with close reference to the tradition and environment of the legendary railway. Impressions and motifs from the surroundings, in particular the Dolder Forest and the stations, served as inspiration.
The new minimalist exterior design is both modern and timeless. The red color of the exterior design is based on the traditional red of the Dolderbahn, with which the population feels a close connection. The golden-yellow doors on the inside and outside are reminiscent of an autumn forest and make it easier for visually impaired passengers to board and exit the train.
The new, spacious interior is bright and uncluttered, inviting you to feel at home. Large windows provide plenty of light and a view of the beautiful surroundings. The forest is featured as an abstract motif on the glass vestibules in the entrance area, creating atmospheric plays of light on the floor and ceiling.
More comfort and user-friendliness for all passengers
In developing the new generation of coaches, Milani has paid special attention to the needs of all user groups. The safety and comfort requirements of the various passengers and railway personnel, which have increased over the years, have been integrated into the new design.
In future, the new Dolderbahn will offer all passengers greater user-friendliness and travel comfort. The passenger area is spacious and barrier-free and now also offers two wheelchair spaces. Many design details conceal improved functionality. For example, the floor in a striking blue and black color has an anti-slip surface. The wooden seats not only provide warmth, but are also hygienic and easy to clean. The indentations in the seats prevent slipping during the inclined ride.
The suspension of the car, the safety of the passengers and the working conditions of the train crew have been significantly improved. Milani has responded to passengers' requests for more privacy. The prints on the glass wall next to the driver's cab create a visually separated workplace and ensure privacy. At the same time, visual contact with the passengers is maintained and safety in the vehicle is guaranteed.
The new passenger information system rounds out passenger comfort. It informs passengers acoustically and visually about stops and connections.
